The complex cost £30.8M to build and includes a sports area for badminton, netball, futsal and volleyball, a cafe, fitness gym, exercise studios and a cycling studio. There is fixed seating for 1,500 people with a total capacity of 5,000. The track hires out bikes and provides taster sessions in attempt to attract people to the facility.

The velodrome was opened on the 20th March 2015 by Sarah Storey. The first major event at the track was a Revolution meeting 14-16th August 2015, riders included Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell Shand, Jason Kenny and Ed Clancy.

Harry Tanfield and his Team HUUB Wattbike colleagues were based at Derby for equipment testing and training for their 4,000m World championships bid.

Local clubs have track sessions at Derby, but the velodrome has not managed to attract high profile track events.
